Register your interest to build the Rebel Army

by Gavin on May 17, 2010

UPDATE: On the 29.07 the Rebels released their membership packages. Those wanting to participate in the below concept, should purchase a Category D membership.

This is a ‘Call to Arms’ for all Rebels supporters. An invitation to help establish a unique and exciting match day experience, to march as one, to be the Rebel Army. Active participation is more than just turning up, it’s time to get serious.

We’re looking to establish a permanent home for the Rebel Army at AAMI Park. This would involve reserving a certain amount of bays, at one end (favourably the Yarra end), behind the in-goal area for the Rebel Army. This introduces a home-end concept to Super Rugby, similar to Soccer in the A-League, otherwise known as “supporter bays”. While it is widely acknowledged these are not the best seats from which to view the games, we’re ultimately aiming to create an energetic atmosphere in support of the home team and in doing so encourage interaction between the players and the fans when scoring points.

Sounds awesome guys. Count me in!

  • Definitely interested and being the cheaper seats means I’m more likely to be able to afford it as well!!

    STIRLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FFS its not soccer or AFL though. This is where we have to distinguish ourselves as something different. If we have a supporter bay, have it on half way. The players have to come back that way after a score. Saves the kicker (in the case of a try) waiting for the AAC style embrace to finish. Are we expected to wait for the penalty kicker to run to one end after 3 points?

Maybe for season tix holders these can be at reduced prices, in the premium seats?

I agree with Welsh Rebel (because I’m Welsh too!!) as having the supporter bays at each end of the pitch isn’t a good idea. Yes, you’d get to see the try being scored in front of you, but that’s about it… If play is at the opposite end, you can’t see the play as it happens, you can’t see the depth of the attacking lines etc… I’m all for grouping the fans together, but I’d rather buy my own tickets in a decent seat where I’ll be able to see the game in it’s entirety.

Food for thought that’s all guys and gals, don’t bite my head off!!!

  • I’m inclined to agree, having watched 100 live rugby games in my life half way on the field opposite to the main stand is the place to be!

I tend to agree with the people calling for a supporter bay on half way. Ground level behind the goals doesn’t give you much opportunity to watch the game if it is being played at the other end. Having watched a game of league at the stadium, I’d suggest you are better off being in the second tier of the stand so your view of the corners aren’t blocked by the people next to you.

  • Gavin Norman says:

Valid point from a spectator point of view, however the half way line seats are always the most expensive.

We don’t want to make the Rebel Army an expensive and elitist group.

We want people of all races, religions and classes to join in and have fun.

  • Welsh Rebel says:

Its a fair point Gavin, but is why I suggest season holders, those that are willing to show commitment get a good rate but in premium seats.

If the Rebel management want to build support, then they should really consider in the inaugural season ticket prices within everyones reach. Which I’m sure they will do.

I don’t think you’ll see many spontaneous celebrations with the crowd if they have to run to halfway.

I’ve watched sport around the world and various places have adopted this policy. It makes for an enjoyable atmosphere.

The supporter ends should be vibrant, loud and chanting for their teams. It’s about atmosphere. If you want to relax and enjoy the game with a good view, you sit on halfway. Its better having the supporter area at the end, as everyone is right on top of each other.

Australian rugby supporters are lacklustre at best. They have no passion. Going to a game feels like going to a nursing home. Noone wanting to speak for fear of being the one who breaks the silence. In fairness Queensland has being it a bit of a go this season, but that is only because they’re going well this season.

You lads say you want to distinguish yourselves from other sports and that is all well and good. But keep the good parts of other sports, learn what works for them, and embrace it. Distinguish with other sports negatives.

Anyway, there is now way you’ll get cheap enough seats on halfway.

    Good comment Darkhorse.

totally agree with darkhorse. having the supporters bay at halfway doesn’t make any sense..
