Introducing forwards coach Mark Bakewell
New Zealand born, Mark Bakewell began his coaching career in Australia .As coach of Eastern Suburbs in Sydney he won NSW coach of the year in 2000. His legacy arguably prepared the club for their 2003 Shute success.
One of the keystones of the Bakewell philosophy is theinherent sense of belonging and commitment he fosters amongst his players:
“All players are important from the captain down… everyone [puts] in the same level of application and [receives that] feeling of importance”.
It was that philosophy which turned around the performances of Brive, a French club languishing in Rugby Pro D2. Under his guidance, Brive returned 24 wins, 5 losses and draw- a performance earning them promotion back to the Top 14 for the 2003-2004 season.
After two years in central France, Bakewell moved to AS Beziers on the Mediterranean coast before taking the plunge to coach in the Guiness Trophy. On his move across the channel, he said
“It’s an honour to work at a club like Bath; it is a fantastic opportunity for me. I’m looking forward to bringing some of my own ideas to the role and building on the outstanding technical foundations left by Michael Foley”
It was at Bath as forwards coach where he truly made a name for himself, scoring a contract extension for his contribution the coaching team that lead Bath’s turn around in short order. He made quite an impression with the fans too. Performances at the “the Rec” began a downward spiral following Bakewell’s departure, which prompted the blogosphere to assert “Bakewell was the brains behind the outfit”.
In addition to club honours, Bakewell was Wallaby strength and conditioning coach under Greg Smith. It is testimony to his talent and skill as a coach the Rod Macqueen specifically hired him to aid in his recruiting players from the Guiness Trophy to join the Melbourne Rebels.
In returning to Australia as a foundation member of the Rebels coaching team, Bakewell firmly believes the talent drain to the northern hemisphere is abating. He’s been on the record advocating a global season where players could freely play for club and country:
“Rugby would benefit worldwide if a freer flow of players was allowed and they could still play for their countries, but you can only do that if the seasons are aligned. December and January could become the off-season and then you could align all the domestic competitions, internationals and then tours”.
It’s that kind of common sense and lateral thinking that exemplifies the Melbourne Rebels as they prepare to assault the Super 15 in 2011.
