Pirates claim the minor premiership as the finals approach
Defending premiers Melbourne have finished 2nd behind Southern Districts, who have claimed the minor the premiership. These two are only separated on bonus points, enough however to make the difference with a home semi final. All four finalists finished strong, with comfortable wins, with exception to Melbourne who defeated the Quins, 39-12 away.

In the major semi final Southern Districts will host Melbourne at Riviera Park this Saturday. At the start of the season, the Pirates got an early one over the Unicorns, but the two subsequent meets give the Unicorns the upper hand. Power House will host the Quins at Albert Park in the minor semi final. These two have met twice this season, with a tight win each. While it’s do or die for these two teams, history shows that the 3rd and 4th place teams generally end up premiers.
A women’s semi final will also be held prior to the Power House and Quins game. Power House will be taking on Box Hill, in a Power House double header. The Juniors semi finals are also on this weekend at the Northern Rugby Club, with action kicking off at 9am.
Last weekend was the start of the country finals. Punkapunyal defeated Cobram in a tight major semi final, 12-7. In the minor, Bendigo comprehensively defeated the Border Army 140-0. Punkapunyal progress to the grand final, while Cobram will host Bendigo in the preliminary final at Cobram.
We can look forward to some cracking rugby this weekend, so make sure you get amongst it.
